B symptoms
B symptoms are a feature of both Hodgkin's lymphomaand non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and include:
- Fever
- Drenching sweats, especially at night
- Weight loss. Weight loss is defined as the loss of more than 10% of body mass in previous 6 months.
Whether or not one has B symptoms is included in the stage of Hodgkin's lymphoma. It can affect the decision about the treatment. B symptoms are a negative prognostic factor patients with lymphoma.
B symptoms can also be found in non-cancerous states such as tuberculosis.
Terminology
Regarding the staging of Hodgkin's lymphoma, a letter B will be added after the stage of disease for patients with the above symptoms. Patients without such syptoms are given a letter A after their stage.
