Abdominoperineal resection

Abdominoperineal resection is surgery, typically to treat cancer of the rectum or anal canal, and involves removal of the anus, the rectum, and part of the sigmoid colonalong with their draining lymph nodes, through incisions made in the abdomenand perineum. The end of the remaining sigmoid colonis brought out permanently as an opening on the surface of the abdomen, called a colostomy. Fecal matter from the stoma is collected in a disposable colostomy bag outside of the body.
