Genotoxic substances are those chemical compoundscapable of causing geneticmutationand of contributing to the developmentof tumors. Radiationis also considered to be genotoxic.
Typical genotoxins like aromatic aminesare believed to cause mutations because they are electrophilicand form strong covalent bondswith DNA, preventing accurate replication.
