Whitaker Foundation
The Whitaker Foundation, based in Arlington, Virginia, is an organization that primarily supports biomedical engineeringeducationand research, but also supports other forms of medicalresearch. It was founded and funded by U. A. Whitakerin 1975upon his death with additional support coming from his wife Helen Whitakerupon her death in 1982. To date the foundation has contributed more then $700 million to various universities and medical schools. The foundation intended to spend its financial resources over a finite period rather than creating an organization that would be around forever. It is set to close on June 30, 2006. The foundation has helped create 30 biomedical engineering programs at various universities and helped finance the construction of 13 buildings, many of them subsequently bearing the name "Whitaker" in some form.
