Rawalpindi Medical College as the name implies, is located in Rawalpindi, the twin city of Islamabad, the Pakistani capital. Rawalpindi Medical College is a comprehensive, state-assisted institution of approximately 1200 students that offers a diverse set of academic programs. All academic programs of the college are accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. The college imparts medical education to undergraduate students. The students are enrolled by a centralized system which takes in account their scores in A-levels/FSc and in the entry test for the medical colleges in the Punjab province. Foreign students of Pakistani origin can apply after converting their transcripts at the IBCC office in Islamabad and applying to the Higher Education Commission. After completion of 5 years of study, students are granted the MBBS degree.Established in March 1974 at Faisalabad, the college was shifted to its present premises on Tipu Road in November the same year. The college has trained over 4500 doctors who have worked both at the national and international level. Rawalpindi Medical College has also trained doctors from many regions of the world who are now playing an important role in the health education in their own countries. International students from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Malaysia, Canada, and USA also attend the institution.The institution is recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council as well as by the General Medical Council of UK and is on the WHO list of accredited medical schools. The college is affiliated with the newly formed University of Health Sciences located in Lahore, Pakistan.The institution provides rigorous educational programs. A string core of liberal teaching is the basis on which undergraduates develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes essential to successful work and concerned citizenship. The institution strives to remain current and relevant through an adequate program of continuing medicine development and the exploration of innovative schedules, methods, and curricular design in keeping with the various needs of its diverse students. The institution has a distinguished record of research and scholarships. Members of teaching staff have won some of the most prestigious awards offered by government agencies and private foundations. The college takes pride in the numerous scholarly books and articles written by members of teaching staff and in their contributions to upgrade the facilities provided to the humanity. Wherever possible, students are involved in research projects. The college publishes a twice yearly journal known as the Journal of Rawalpindi Medical College(JRMC). Unfortunately no web resources exist for current issues. The Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi General Hospital and The District Head Quarters Hospital. Well equipped departments of Surgery, Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics, ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Paediatrics, Cardiology, Orthopedic Surgery and Neurosurgery are part of the hospitals.Rawalpindi Medical College is standing on the property of Gordon College (Rawalpindi).Notable events during the year include a sports week in the spring time ending with an annual dinner and variety show. Graduation ceremonies occur infrequently, sometimes after a break of many years in which case attendance is low as many have moved abroad.
