The Max Planck Institute for Medical Research is a medical research institute located in Heidelberg, Germany. It was renamed from Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Medical Research in honour of the German physicist Max Planck . The institute is part of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, a network of scientific research institutes mainly located in Germany.Several Noble Prize laureates worked at the institute; Otto Meyerhof, Richard Kuhn, Fritz Lipmann, Walter Bothe, Severo Ochoa, Rudolf Mößbauer, André Lwoff, George Wald and Bert Sakmann .Currently, the four departments making up the Institute are led, respectively by Ilme Schlichting (Molecular Biology), Bert Sakmann (Cell Physiology), Peter Seeburg (Neuronal Biology) and Winfried Denk (Biomedical Optics).
