From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Henry Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJFTM) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to investigate any malady that can affect United States military personnel and their dependents.
Divisions
The divisions of HJF range from infection disease and cancer to amputee and biodefense research. By far the largest division is the U.S. Military HIV Research Program (USMHRP), whose mission is to protect U.S. military personnel and aid the international fight against HIV. The USMHRP is based in Rockville, MD and works closely with U.S. military installations such as Walter Reed Hosptial WRAMC and Walter Reed Army Institute of Medicine WRAIR as well as international organizations such as Makerere University in Uganda, Mbeya Medical Research Programme in Tanzania and the World Health Organization. Mission
THe USMHRP's missions include investigating candidate vaccines against HIV and increasing the understanding not only what will be required of a globally effective vaccine but also of the easiest, most cost effective method of quantifying the efficacy of the vaccine in remote sites. By investigating the epidemiology of HIV, developing assays that probe both quantity and type of viral loads and tirelessly working to elicit immunological responses to HIV antigens, the USMHRP hopes to develop a more effective treatment for a scourage that affects over 40 million people.
