ABC Daytime and SOAP Net President Brian Frons announced during a December 2007 interview with TV Guide's Michael Logan that there will be a second season of Night Shift. However, "Frons says he won't repeat the mistakes of Season 1, when plots didn't sync up with those on the mother ship. (Maxie, dying on one show, was a very busy slut on the other.) Frons admits the spin-off 'put a big strain on the GH team.' Overview

As the second spin-off to General Hospital, Night Shift will delve deeper into the relationships, friendships and medical cases seen at the hospital. Night Shift's stories will be self-contained and wrap up during each one-hour episode. Characters will be selected from General Hospital and will be mostly comprised of younger bam! characters with ties to core families. It has also been stated that Night Shifts story lines will not intersect with General Hospital's. Therefore characters who are on both Night Shift and General Hospital'' could be in completely different situations on each show. However, at the end of the 13 episode run, the characters and storylines would be intertwined with "General Hospital".

The premiere episode of GH: Night Shift made it the highest-rated show in SOAPnet history, with 1,000,000 total viewers. Criticism

"NSs only redeeming aspect and its real legacy to daytime is its bravura casting. Casting directors Mark Teschner and Gwen Hillier introduced a group of new actors who are universally talented and interesting. No brainless hunk or hunkette models typically hired en masse on most soaps (Days of Our Lives!). For NS, Teschner and Hillier made very well thought-out choices: the politically chic, not to mention gorgeous Nanizin Boniadi; the unusual looking and very goofy Dominic Rains (Leo); Graham Shiels (sexy villain Cody), and an appealingly real Angel M. Wainwright (Regina), a real gem. As you know, NS cast member Amanda Baker (psycho Jolene) has already been franchised out to All My Children as the new Babe."'' (GH-NS: Good Night and Good Riddance)
