Father Muller Medical College

Fr. Muller Medical College, located about a kilometre from the National Highway-17 (the Mumbai - Mangalore highway) at Kankanady in Mangalore, is a religious minority educational institution forming a part of Fr. Muller's Charitable Institutions. It is famous for being one of the oldest hospitals in Mangalore, a coastal town on the west coast of India with five other medical colleges to its credit.

History

Fr. Muller's Hospital, a well known household name, opened its doors to the people of South Canara in 1880. It started when Fr Augustus Muller, a German Jesuit priest dispensed homeopathic medicines under a Banyan tree. It then went on to become a Leprosy Hospital(now known as the St Joseph's Leprosy Hospital) and then into a fully fledged hospital. Its started the school of nursing which offered diploma in general nursing and midwifery and later College of nursing which offered degree in Bachelor of Nursing science .The medical college started in 1991 with postgraduate courses and then went on to include other courses under its banner, including the Bachelors in Physiotherapy (1994-95) and then of Medicine and Surgery] (MBBS) course in 1999. Fr Mullers also boasts of a beautiful chapel. The main source of Fr Mullers Medical College Hospital's income is known to be the Non Resident Indian / Foreign candidates applying for admission.

Administration

The college is fully run by the Diocese of Mangalore with its president being Most Rev Dr. Aloysius P. D'Souza, Bishop Of Mangalore. Others in the administration include:

    The college is affiliated to Fr. Muller Medical College Hospital. The college rural health care centre is located at Mullerkad, near Kavoor as well as PHCs at Surathkal and Bondel. The college conducts regular camps from time to time in far-flung areas in and around Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

    Undergraduate courses

    The college offers a four and a half year MBBS course affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences with a one year compulsory rotating internship. There are 100 seats of which 40% admissions are through a state level CET, 40% through the COMEDK entrance test, 15% through the NRi quota and 5% through the Management dicretionary quota. The college also offers a course in B.P.T (Bachelors in Physiotherapy), B.Sc M.L.T (Medical Laboratory Technology) and B.Sc Radiography.

    Postgraduate courses

    Postgraduate degree (MD/MS) and diploma in various specialities which include Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Radio-diagnosis, Psychiatry and Pathology.

    Events

    The one event that manages to capture the imagination of the Mullerians is the yearly interclass competition, named "The Quest" in 2004, "The Arena" in 2005, "The Conquest" in 2006 and "The Apocalypse" in 2007. This is one event that manages to put all on campus into the background. Fr Mullers also conducts an Inter-College Competition known as the "Mullerfest" on a yearly basis.
