Edward Khantzian

Dr. Edward J. Khantzian is a clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. [http://www.divisiononaddictions.org/faculty/khantzian.pdf] He is the co-originator of the self-medication hypothesis of drug abuse which states that individuals abuse drugs in attempt to self-medicate. As an example, individuals with attention deficit disorder commonly abuse cocaine and amphetamines which work similarly to Ritalin by enhancing dopaminergic activity in the brain.[http://self-med-hypothesis.tripod.com/id5.html] Dr. Khantzian is a graduate of Boston University and completed his medical education at Albany Medical College of Union University.
