California Nurses Association

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The California Nurses Association (CNA) is the largest and fastest-growing labor union and professional association of Registered Nurses in California. The National Nurses Organizing Committee is a national labor union for Registered Nurses, and is affiliated with the CNA.The executive director of the CNA is long-time labor organizer Rose Ann DeMoro. Deborah Burger, RN, is the current president of the CNA.

Policies and activism

The CNA was instrumental in gaining passage of legislation, over the opposition of the California Hospital Association, that required hospitals in California to reduce the patient-to-nurse ratio to 5-to-1. Under DeMoro's leadership, the CNA took the lead role in mobilizing opposition to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's pro-business, anti-union policies in 2005.
